The School and Its Resources

A LANDMARK NURSING EDUCATION PROGRAM

Founded in 1883, Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing represented a template of the Nightingale training schools established in the latter part of the 19th century, both in this country and abroad. Irene Sutliffe, a leader in the early history of organized nursing, and a graduate of the New York Hospital was the School’s founding director.

For the next 92 years the School of Nursing grew and thrived as a hospital-based diploma program for the education of professional nurses. In 1975, the School was empowered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York to confer the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree. Between 1979 and 1985 the National League for Nursing (NLN) conducted a pilot project, Diploma Schools of Nursing Education in Transition to Associate Degree-Granting Programs, designed to determine the feasibility for hospital-based associate degree programs to satisfy criteria for specialized accreditation. In 1985, Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing was one of only three pilot institutions to receive maximal initial accreditation from the Council of Associate Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing (now known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission). Today, LICHSON continues to be accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and is registered with the State Education Department.

Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing is a dynamic and progressive single purpose, degree-granting institution located within a prominent voluntary academic medical center. The School is one of the nation’s oldest schools of professional nursing in continuous operation.

In the spring of 1998, Long Island College Hospital became part of Continuum Health Partners. Long Island College Hospital shares partnership status with Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Medical Center and the New York Eye and Ear Hospital. This partnership is dedicated to improving the health of the people of New York and provides a great resource for the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing.
